Snowman

I wanted to animate a snowman with actual snow. I'm still not exactly sure how this could work. My plan was to build a simple wire frame (out of a clothes hanger) to guide movement of the 3 snow balls (classic snowman design) . Then animate the character outside to not allow the snow to melt. Originally, I wanted to photograph it at night with a flash. This was to prevent mockery of my neighbors and to not allow the snow to melt under hot lights. Also, the set up would be too complex as I would have to run an extension cord through my door or window to the street.

Before gather snow, I had anticipated these problems: 1, the wire frame would no longer bend easily after encompassed snow; 2, the temperature outside many be too cold for me to spend much time animating; and 3, the snow may not stick.

later...
After gathering sticky snow to experiment inside my freezer, I realized that my flash is very bright and its hard to decipher if it is actually snow. I couldn't get a lot of detail, but I was also very close to the character. Also the head (or 3rd ball) broke off, because it was too small to stick together. Then I took the snowman outside to finish building him. The bottom half clumped together nicely. It also looked like I could move the wire and the snow seemed to give in an organic looking way. However, I still could not workout the head. He just looked like a snowy volcano with a hanger at the top. Now that I think about it, it looked cotton candy upside down. I had to give up because I was freezing. I forgot to check the time. It would be helpful to know how long I lasted in cold. I'm afraid the is the end of that...for now.

Trying for Kansas

I've been agonizing for more than 10 hours about purchasing a flight to Kansas. Each time I go buy a flight, the price shoots up. I'm convinced that travolocity and orbits are keeping track of my IP address. Each time I search flights the price is around 279 or so, but after I complete the process the price has doubled. Why is this?

You are probably wondering why I waited until now. Well, I lost my debit card 2 days ago. I haven't reported it lost/stolen yet because I'm hoping it is in my apartment or the bank atm. The only way I can purchase online now is by using my mastercard, which was hitting my credit limit. So, I had to first pay mastercard, then wait for that payment to clear before I could book a flight.

Two days ago, I thought 279 was too much for my budget. Now, I'm looking for 300 xmas day, one-way. I will have to figure out the return flight later, because I just can't afford a 400 dollar ticket right now.

My other options are: amtrak, but that will get there morning of the 26th, and craigslist rideshare, but i wont be lucky enough to find one. This is my ad http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/rid/1518141006.html
so if you are heading out there...let me know.

Here are some pictures from my camera:

money....

I just realized that I did not actually finish my story in my previous post. I will soon.

For now please enjoy this letter...

To My Dear Gertrud,
I regret that I was not able to write until now. I was kidnapped by South American drug lords while traveling to Belize. After becoming infected with a bot fly, the locals showed my how to "smoke it out" using a beer bottle and match. Because of this incident, the drug lords mistook me for a member of the DEA and held me captive in a warehouse of marijuana. To escape, I had to burn the place down and suffered from smoke inhalation and an extreme high which has damaged my ability to spell and use grammar correctly. The bot fly situation was also remedied do to the fire. Tomorrow, I will attempt to swim 10 miles of the Gulf into the US because the drug lords confiscated my passport. Wish me luck. I will be thinking of you.

I miss you dearly,
Gavin

P.S Thank you for the book, Jack, by AM Homes and for the two hundred dollars on page 135. I think it will help me return to New York and read the letter you have addressed to by very good and platonic friend, Christi. I also hope that finding a vinyl copy of the Tegan and Sara album was not difficult. Here is a picture of me looking at a buzzard.

Craigslist Ikea Bookcase

I found a bookcase on Craigslist for $60. It was the ikea model I had been coveting for months. So I rented a pickup truck and drove to the West Village via West Side Highway. Then got lost for an hour looking for the intersection of Bleecker and Sullivan. My journey became a series of left hand turns to one way streets before I managed to maneuver onto the disjointed part of Bleecker St. The route looked something like this:
The guy also threw in a smaller bookcase for $20. How could I say no?
The larger of the two was too big for the bed of the truck and I'm guessing it doesn't disassemble easily. We layed the cases down although it still didn't quite fit.

I drove to Harlem via 6th and 8Th Avenues. Prayed that I wouldn't get a ticket or have to quickly switch lanes.

The large bookcase (seen in picture) was heavy as a tree. My wheelie-cart was positioned in along side the tail gate. My plane was to shove the case off the gate, onto the wheelie-cart and haul it to my steps. It was a scheme Wile E. Coyote might try. My plan to haul was supposed to be like this:

This did not work.

Stork

This is about a month old...so is Amy's baby, Juni should be about a month old too. I wanted to draw her a little illustration because my drawing desk was set up at the time. By drawing desk I mean a 3.5' x 8" plank of wood inclined by my typewriter and held in place by my clip-lamp. It works for now :)I thought the delivery company "BabEx" at the last minute. I wish I thought of a more cleaver name.
