Last night i was a part of a hunt for a homeless man and his box of kittens. Yeah. yeah. My friend, Leslie, works for an organization to help stray or mistreated cats. she gives kitties medicine.
Sometimes we meet up after her shift and grab tacobell or wendys, and starbucks and call it a night. woohoo crazy friday night. however, last night i called to confirm when to meet up. that's when she told me about the "operation" going on at her work.
The operation: confront a homeless man about his box of 2 day old kittens. Leslie explained that the guy uses the cats to gain sympathy but doesn't feed them. instead he feeds himself, lets the animals starve and somehow obtains more strays. i have also heard that he sells the kittens.
I had the image of 5 or more people bullying a homeless man for his pets. oh no. i had to see this.
i took the train down to union square. there was a group of cat people about to caravan up to Penn station to check out that location.
while standing in a cirlcle in the street, he head Lady said " oh we don’t have to bring everyone. 'Dan, Ashley and I will go and everyone else can go home if they want."
these were great words. i looked at Leslie (standing in the bike lane-her back to the on coming traffic) as if this was our chance to escape. Yum taocbell. no bullying a homeless man. 7 layer burrito.
Then Dan said, "No i think it should really be a group effort. the more people we have...well, we can create a human wall if we have to pressure him!" Dan wanted to rehearse. the first plan was to offer to buy the kittens. i'm not sure what the plan was after that. but it made sense to me. buy the kittens. he might have been selling them anyway.
we divided into 2 cars and drove up to Penn. station. (the rollingstones were playing at MSG). our ride dropped us off and left. i was starving.
while crossing 7th ave to the suv filled with cat carriers, cat food and 3 cat rescurers, the thought of being arrested came to mind.
Ashley was already down in Penn looking around. the head Lady was in the van as home base. and Dan was about to double check Herald square station. Leslie took this moment to asure me that there was an open tacobell/kfc/nathans there. so we were going to follow him.
just as Dan placed his valubles in the back of the van ( the Stones marque playing over his sholders) he pulled a small knife out of his pocket. open it. inspected it. closed it and put it back in his pocket.
oh god this guy is going to be arrested i thought. there were cops everywhere. i grabbed Leslie's sleeve and whispered " i'm gonna run" she looked back at me as if to say "yeah me too."
I mean Dan seemed really nice and he liked kittens. but he had a knife. what did he think he was going to do with it? I guess it was protection incase the homeless man had a knife too. he was going fight a homeless man? he was going to Knife- fight a homeless man? what happened to Buy the kittens. i liked that plan. buy the kittens. he might have been selling them anyway.
we get to herald square and we see no homeless man with a box of kittens. thank god. Dan wanted to check other entrances and corners. I didn’t see anything. i did see Korean food. maybe the guy was at Penn or maybe he set up somewhere else. i didnt want to go looking for this guy i just wanted to eat.
so with a generic "oh man, next time!" Leslie and i said goodbye to Dan and went in search of cheap Korean food instead.
